Registered Charity No: 1062611

Autism Concern (formerly Northamptonshire Society for Autism) are facing a funding shortfall because of a major drop in grants and donations. The credit crunch and general economic downturn are among factors to blame.

Our Director Sylvia Tilaks said: ¨This is the most desperate situation. Adverse market forces have caused our reserves and income to plummet such that if we do not see a significant increase in our income we will be unable to sustain the number of services that we currently offer.

"Providing such a wide range of invaluable services to so many local people is very expensive. We are a lean charity with running costs at a bare minimum, but are still struggling to meet demand for services."

Autism is a life-long neurological disability that inhibits the development of imagination, communication and social skills causing people with the condition to have difficulties in making sense of the world around them, forming relationships and developing language.

The charity was set up 17 years ago by a group of parents with autistic children. Many of the founders are still involved today. Our experience and expertise comes from the majority of our trustees and 5 of our staff who are parents of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. We have always based our services around our knowledge of the essential needs of people with ASD and the barriers they face at all stages towards leading healthy and inclusive lives. We focus on provision that is immediate and offers help, support and training which has an impact on the well-being of the whole family unit. Some of the services we provide include: Help and advice telephone line, Advocacy service, Drop-in and Information Centre, Web site, Vocational training for 16+ autistic people, Easter & Summer Play schemes, and free courses for Parents and our Awareness and Training courses.

The demand for help and support will continue to increase as more and more families struggle with the challenges of coping with autism. Please help us to continue to give them the support they need.
