Banana Appeal is on a Big Yellow mission to feed ONE Million school meals of fresh fruit to hungry children in some of the poorest areas of Africa.

The charity was founded by Kevin “Banana Man” Allen, who’s mission has transformed the lives of many thousands of children.

Here is his incredible story:

In February 2005 I saw the terrible plight of aids orphans in South Africa on a TV documentary, and quite literally went Bananas!

I watched in horror as a young boy witnessed his father die of AIDS in front of his own eyes. He had to walk miles back to his home, a filthy mud hut with no running water, gas or electricity. Distraught and starving, he soon broke down in tears - so did I. His mother had already died of AIDS and his brave sister, aged only 11, tried to comfort him in vain.

The programme continued, and so did the scenes of inhumanity. Thousands of children had lost their parents to AIDS and were left frightened and alone, in poverty and starving.

I found myself asking why the world would allow this to happen - a voice in my head said back - Why do you?

I knew from that instant I would not.

Six days later I was standing in Zululand, Africa.

This journey changed my life forever and in the three years that followed I took more incredible journeys back into Zululand, feeding over 400,000 school meals of fresh fruit to hungry children and AIDS orphans there, without any fundraising or financial support whatsoever!

In this time I'd sold my home and used up the proceeds to help the children, and had been working an additional part time job for nearly two years simply to maintain the fruit to school projects which I had set up.

By this time I was feeding a thousand children a day, single handedly; but I was burnt out, at my wits end, and shamefully close to giving up…but thankfully didn’t.

In 2008 I started a charity called Banana Appeal and in our first year we fed over 300,000 school meals of fresh fruit to hungry children.
